Oak Hammock Marsh

A couple weeks ago we had the opportunity, initiated by grandpa, to go to Oak Hammock Marsh. It is located almost 3 hours from us.  It is north of Winnipeg a bit.

Oh, yes that is Deereandy in the picture and it is harvest time.  We went on a Sunday and since he rarely works a Sunday in the year, we were good.

This was a great way to start our explorations at the marsh.  The gentleman driving was very knowledgeable about the marsh and wildlife.  Lots of good discussion and learning.

Walking into the interpretive center.  It is the height of Canadian Goose migration for these couple weeks.  Certainly it isn't the only place to see the migration, but this marsh has very high numbers at times.  It wasn't unusually busy as far as geese went, but I didn't really care to see them anyway.  They are kinda jerks.  And have gross poop.  I was very impressed with the center though and all of the education that goes on!

After the ride, the kids were thrilled to see one of the horses relieve himself on the gravel as it splattered far and wide.  And they went around front to thank the beauties for the smooth ride.

Ready to explore!

Dimple's favorite part.  A little excavating station to play at.

We went fishing!

A little outdoor lecture area.  Certainly smaller than a Greek amphitheater
.

 Hip waders.

Dress up area

The rooftop is made to be natural habitat.  Apparently there were 8 nesting pairs of ducks on the roof this summer.

Part of the marsh.  There are canoes you can take out.

I guess LoLo wanted to observe the sky.

Chirpee has to check out the full range of motion and workings per his mechanical self.

This reminds me that LoLo is getting to take ballet in a couple weeks.  I can't wait to go to her first recital - nothing cuter than little ballerinas!

More habitat.

The boys' favorite place by far.  The sand table.  Water, diggers, movers and all!

I loved this.  They had x-rays of different marsh creatures.  The left is a turtle and the right is obviously a toad/frog/amphibious critter.

Live cameras on areas of marsh.  I took the picture because I wasn't sure what Deereandy was thinking, but it was one of those "I'm trying to figure something out" looks of his.  Perhaps a little like Chirpee playing with the telescope.

Sunset going home - I cannot capture the beauty with my camera or abilities in a moving vehicle!
